Buying Guide: Second-Hand Activa Scooters

second hand activa buying guide

Given the skyrocketing cost of petrol and the deteriorating state of many city roads, it could make more sense to change from a car to a two-wheeler, such as a scooter. But let’s be honest— brand-new scooters are also getting extremely expensive these days.

For some people, purchasing a used scooter is preferable. However, purchasing second-hand vehicles carries some risk.

One of the most popular two-wheelers in India is the Honda Activa. At a starting price of around ₹78,000, the Honda Activa boasts an outstanding feature-set that guarantees maximum rider convenience. For those who intend to purchase a second hand Honda Activa, the following checklist can help you immensely:

  • Examine the Condition

First impressions can be lasting for your second-hand Activa. Thus, be sure to examine the used Honda Activa from several perspectives to ensure that it is in good shape and is free of damage. Before deciding to purchase this second hand Honda Activa, you should inspect it for scratches.

Also, never depend solely on the images that the seller has emailed or uploaded. Meet the vendor in person in the day so you can have a close look at the scooter.

Verify the scooter’s physical state:

  • Check for dents, scratches, and cracked panels on the scooter.
  • Pay close attention to the screw fastening locations of the panels, especially on scooters with plastic bodies.
  • Shake the panels firmly by hand to listen for any rattling or squeaking noises.
  • Check for rust

A used Honda Activa has a high probability of experiencing a rush, causing it to get eroded and rusty in certain regions. You need to inspect the entire chassis area for any apparent rust marks while inspecting in order to ensure its sturdiness and prevent further costs.

  • Examine the headlight

  • Check that the headlights of the used Honda Activa are working properly before buying.
  • Ensure the wiring and power joints are secure and insulation is intact.
  • Verify that the blinkers and switches are functioning well.
  • Avoid buying a bike that is missing any of these important components to avoid costly repairs later on.
  • Check the engine

The next step is to inspect the engine, which requires turning the scooter on to see if it is releasing smoke or needless noise. Since the engine is the most crucial part of any car, you should never settle for a scooter with a broken engine.

  • Look for oil leaks

Along with inspecting every other component, you also need to look for oil leaks near the engine. Make sure to get any leaks fixed before purchasing the used Honda Activa,  no matter how small they are.

  • Examine the original documents

Along with the inspection of components, it’s crucial that you transfer the ownership of the Honda Activa into your name. To complete all the paperwork, you also need to gather the PUC certificate, registration papers, insurance papers, and other documents.

You are also advised to look at the odometer (speedometer) for the reading. Is it too low given the scooter’s age? Does it look new and unfaded compared to the bike? If yes, odds are it was supplanted sometime during the Activa’s life.

  • Go for a test drive

Finally, see if you can enjoy the pleasure and convenience that the scooter provides for yourself by going for a test ride. Inspection and examination are no match for actually riding the scooter and experiencing its movements yourself.

Check the engine’s responsiveness while you’re riding. Verify that the brakes function as they should. When you ride, do you hear any squeaking or rattling sounds? Take note of this.

You can try holding the handlebar gently on an open section of a straight, smooth road to see if the scooter pulls to one side or if the front wheel wobbles all of a sudden. However, only take this action if you have enough faith in your riding abilities.

  • Get your scooter inspected

Before making a purchase, it is always a good idea to have a second hand scooter inspected by a qualified mechanic.

This is due to the fact that a skilled mechanic is able to spot possible concerns or faults with the scooter that a layperson would miss and make sure that the engine and other mechanical parts are in good operating condition by properly inspecting them.

A skilled mechanic can also determine how much any necessary repairs will cost.

You should also examine the state of the engine, suspension, electrical components, tires, brakes, lights, and body.

You can have peace of mind knowing that you’re getting a dependable and secure vehicle by having the scooter inspected by a qualified mechanic.

  • Cost

Last, obvious, and much needed mention is the cost of the old Activa you’re looking to buy.

Have a maximum number that you’re willing to spend while buying the scooty. If you find a great deal above that, sure, go ahead and consider it. Otherwise it is recommended to stick to your budget and not go above it.

You can get a used Honda Activa both on online sites and offline, so the choice is yours while buying a second-hand Honda Activa. Wish you luck!
